Let's talk Danish.

Four things I love about Denmark

Hello there! As you've already guessed from the title, today I would like to talk about my favorite place on earth, Denmark. Yeah I know this photo of the place is very cliche but it still makes me smile no matter how many times I see it.

More specifically, I would like to tell you a few words about the things that I love about Denmark and who knows, maybe you find it interesting and dive more into their culture like I did.

The food

And to be more specific, the desserts. In general, I love their cuisine, but the kind of sweets they have makes you happy. First of all they trigger many of your senses. It's not just eating. It's the sweet warm smell that makes you hungry. It's the texture that's so enjoyable. And of course the taste. Oh the taste, when I think of the danish desserts all I can think is butter, sugar and so many other cute things! Let me give you an example. In case you didn't know ( like I didn't) these adorable little cookies that everybody loves and could easily eat the whole box in one day, the ones that come in the big round metal box that ends up to be filled with your grandma's sewing set. Yes these. This is a danish recipe from the very old times. When I discovered that, for some reason, I became extra happy eating them!

Also, if you ever visit Denmark, do yourself a favor and visit La Glace. One of the best dessert places in the country, and one of the oldest (if not the oldest). Thank me later.

The lifestyle

If you have ever heard something about Denmark, that's probably about the way they live. It's not just that they are always in the top 3 of the happiest countries in the world. It's not only the hygge tradition. It's not only a minimal lifestyle. It's a combination of all these. They know how to make the most of their lives in their way. To be honest, their way of living it's not for everyone. They prefer to mostly spend their time at home. Not necessarily on their own. It's an absolute tradition for them to invite over their friends to cook, eat, drink and see a movie all together. And here I would like to tell you a few things about hygge, just in case you've never heard of it before. The more easy way to explain it is to compare it with coziness. But with some differences. Hygge is something that can be combined with almost everything in the everyday life. Candles, blankets, good food and wine are some of the best worlds to describe hygge. And yes, I'm a huge fan of it. If you are interested in knowing more about hygge I suggest you read Meik Winking's book about it. You're gonna love it!

The danish interior design

Danish people, as most Scandinavians, are big fans of minimalism and simplicity. What I really love about them is their furniture design. They have beautiful pieces and the most amazing thing about them is that they're mostly very old designs, yet so classic. Clear lines, a lot of wood, leather, comfort, are some of the words that describe perfectly the danish design in furniture.

Also, when it comes to lighting, they want lamps that will make the light very soft in the room. They hate very strong lights in their homes. That's also part of the hygge-mood. You will see low lighting in most of their coffee shops and restaurants. If you see one with bright lights, it would probably be empty. Yes that's pretty important to them.

The architecture

An amazing thing in Denmark, if you are an architect/design/decoration lover, is the combination of the old and new. You can see amazing old buildings with many colors, typical lines, small balconies, stones and cute windows that would take you in a years-ago-mood. On the other hand, you will see big modern buildings, covered in glass with clear lines. The ultimate minimal design. It's like a glimpse into the future. The best part about this thing is that the combination of these two completely different styles, come together in such a great harmony that gives a beautiful result.

All these things make Denmark an amazing place to visit (or even live in) and fall in love with. And that's a promise.
